Passage:  Matthew 13:31-35 The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven

1.  Why do you think a very small mustard seed was chosen to represent the kingdom of God?

2.  What is the goal of the birds of the air in verse 32?  Why are they such an apt type of the Devil’s children?

3.  It would seem natural to assume that the leaven of verse 33 must represent something good since it is likened to the gospel of Heaven.  What are the dangers of this assumption?  How can the gospel become leaven to a Christian?

4.  Whom do you think the woman in verse 33 represents?  How do we make certain that we aren’t leavening God’s Word when we speak of it to others?

5.  Application:  Whose job is it to counteract false doctrines?  Are you doing your part?

6.  Application:  Jesus used parables quite often while teaching, and had to explain them even to His closest disciples.  What are some of the blessings and pitfalls of parables?  How do we counteract the pitfalls?
